SUMMARY:Talk: Search for Identity in Asian American Art
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Mary Ann Milford-Lutzker\, Professor of Art History and Carver Professor of East Asian Studies at Mills College for a talk about two important Asian American artists\, Zarina Hashmi and Hung Liu\, whose work references home\, identity\, journeys\, and displacement. In exploring the concept of home and its multiple meanings\, borders\, maps\, and geographies abound in Zarina Hashmi's minimalist representations which comprise prints\, woodblocks\, and sculptures.  These mirror her extensive travels through India\, Southeast Asia\, France\, Germany\, and the U.S. Hung Liu explores the tensions of immigration and emigration through large scale installations\, paintings\, murals\, drawings\, and printmaking\, investigating complex interactions between memory\, history\, and cultural identity. Both artists have major exhibitions in the US: Hashmi's Paper Like Skin at UCLA's Hammer Museum and the Guggenheim\, New York\; and Liu's Offerings at Mills College Art Museum to be followed by the Oakland Museum of California retrospective. Co-presented with the Society for the Art and Cultural Heritage of India (SACHI).
