SUMMARY:In-Gallery Talk: On Myth\, Icons\, Gender\, and Comics
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Chitra Ganesh and Qamar Adamjee\, associate curator of South Asian art\, for a discussion/conversation in the South Asia galleries. Using the museum's collection as a platform\, this program explores ideas such as the role of narrative from myth to comics\, of text and image layering\, and issues of gender that inform and inspire Ganesh's work. The program concludes with a short presentation by the artist to see the manifestation of these ideas in Ganesh's work.Chitra Ganesh was born and raised in Brooklyn\, NY\, where she currently lives and works. Her drawing\, installation\, text-based work\, and collaborations seek to excavate and circulate buried narratives typically excluded from official canons of history\, literature\, and art\, inviting the viewer to consider alternate narratives of femininity\, sexuality\, and power as untold stories rise to the surface. Ganesh graduated from Brown University magna cum laude with a BA in Comparative Literature and Art Semiotics in 1996. In 2001 she attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture\, and received her MFA from Columbia University in 2002.For more information about the artist please visit Gallery Wendi Norris.Image credit: Chitra Ganesh\, Melancolia (The Thick of Time)\, 2010.
