SUMMARY:Screening: From Jean-Paul Sartre to Teresa Teng: Contemporary Cantonese Art in the 1980s
DESCRIPTION:Screening followed by a talk with the film's director Jane DeBevoiseFrom Jean-Paul Sartre to Teresa Teng: Contemporary Cantonese Art in the 1980s\, produced by the Asia Art Archive\, considers the impact of books\, magazines\, and popular culture on the development of experimental art in Southern China during the 1980s\, a formative period in the history of contemporary art in China. The documentary explores the generally overlooked contributions of the art scene in South China\, in particular Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Based on primary research\, rare film footage\, and personal interviews with key artists\, the film shows the reading fever that gripped the Chinese art world in the 1980s as well as the experimentation and energy of artists and critics\, whose contributions to the development of contemporary art have been fundamental.Join Jane DeBevoise\, Chair of Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong\, and New York\, and Zheng Shengtian\, Managing Editor of Yishu Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art for a post screening conversation and Q&A.This event was made possible by the W.L.S. Spencer Foundation.\n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site
