Talk: A Moment for Ink

Join scholar Gordon Chang and artist Hung Liu as they discuss the history of ink painting in America in relation to artworks by Zhang Shuqi, Wang Yachen, and Wang Jiyuan, on view as part of the larger Bay Area exhibition, The Moment for Ink. Providing a historical context for the exodus of artists and intellectuals from China in the 1940s, and the next generation of artists who left China after the Cultural Revolution, the talk charts different moments of infusion of Chinese art into American culture. The talk will be moderated by Mark Johnson, professor of art and gallery director at San Francisco State University.

The Moment for Ink represents an unprecedented collaboration by Bay Area Arts organizations to promote the awareness of the legacy of ink painting in America - both historical and contemporary. The larger exhibition is co-organized by San Francisco State University and CCCArts of the Chinese Culture Foundation, in association with the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and Silicon Valley Asian Art Center. The rotation at the Asian Art Museum opens February 25 and features artworks by Wang Yachen, Wang Jiyuan, and Zhang Shuqi. This project spans 120 years and features about 150 works by nearly 50 historical and contemporary artists who have made important, permanent impacts on ink painting during their careers in the United States.
