Year of the Snake Celebration

Celebrate the Year of the Snake with students from the Chinese American International School presenting classical music and dance from Chinese ethnic minorities to kick off the Lunar New Year. The program ends, as tradition states, with a playful student-arranged version of the lion dance which is believed to scare away evil spirits and ensure a bright beginning to the year. After the performance, enjoy Oliver Chin's presentation about Chinese zodiac animals and their characteristics, and discover something new about yourself. Chin has written more than a dozen books including the series, Tales from the Chinese Zodiac. Also, make an art project to take home with SCRAP, the non-profit creative reuse center.

Enjoy Oliver Chin's presentation about Chinese zodiac animals and their characteristics, and discover something new about yourself.

Make snake-inspired art, a Year of the Snake button to wear, or rub on a temporary tattoo featuring animals from the museum's collection.

Move with yogi Lorna Reed as she leads us in meditation and a Hatha flow practice.

3:00 pm–3:45 pm  Special Cantonese Storytelling for Families  Meet at the Information Desk

San Francisco Public Library Children's Librarian, Eric Auyeung, presents traditional Chinese stories in Cantonese (no English translation).
